"Michael Darigan is a natural born writer, when you read his words, you become a welcome guest in the world he has created."
David Amram, Composer
"To live, to fail, to err, to triumph, to re-create life out of life."
-James Joyce, Portrait of the Artist as Young Man
Michael Darigan is a writer you don’t meet every day. His work is contemplative, non-traditional, disorienting and authentic. Michael transforms experiences from a life lived far from the beaten path, into riveting and revealing literary art that has contingency. His writing can be described as a blend of Kerouac and Thoreau, embodying the spontaneity and Wanderlust of the former, with the spiritual/pantheistic meditations on society, nature and technology of the latter.
Michael attended New College, Oxford and graduated Emerson College in 1996.
Writing without concern for publication, and combined with voracious reading and philosophizing, Michael has developed a unique and compelling voice. He possesses an intimacy with words. Through vivid descriptions, genuine dialogue and the intention to present “slices of life” without moralizing, Michael’s work flows like a brook, jumps like a Fisher cat and cascades like a cataract in the reader’s imagination.
"Preaching is fatal to art in literature” -Stephen Crane
Michael’s work explores what Baudelaire described as the two poles of human existence: the ideal and the spleen; the mystic and the hedonistic, spiritual and the carnal. Born in the early 70’s, Michael was raised in an inner city, multi-cultural environment that was still redolent with the action and hopes of the 60’s.
Growing up over the next two decades, Michael’s life in a middle class, American-Irish Catholic family taught him virtues, morals and to accept others unlike him. Heading towards Wall Street and the promise of the American Dream, Michael took the path less traveled by way of putting the pen to paper.
Now in his forties, Michael has organized and formatted his vast archive of writing into various manuscripts for publication.
backpocket e-pistles is Michael's first book. This collection of edited e-mail correspondence between MIKE D and his three best friends during 1996, when all four guys were in college offers an illuminating look into the lives of sincere, rebellious and creative young men at the turn of the century, before smart phones and APPS took over.
VAGABOND is Michael's most recent book. This collection of linked short stories, interpolated with prose and poetic impressions, explores a writer's insatiable curiosity and lust for life. These stories are non traditional, immersive and contemplative. Through Michael's unique writing style, tone and pace, these stories brings the reader right into the moment where he/she experiences the action directly and is not hammered over the head with moralizing or a forced plot point.
